About the 2012 Chaco Culture 5 Oz American Silver ATB

The America the Beautiful series has released five coins each year since 2010. This coin among the rarest in the series, with a total mintage of just 24,400 pieces!

Here are some highlights of this coin:

  • Coin contains 5 ounces of .999 pure silver bullion.
  • Produced in the United States by the US Mint.
  • Coin is legal tender US currency with a face value of 25¢, though its metal and numismatic value is much greater.
  • Design features the Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
  • Produced by the US Mint; the second of five designs made in 2012.

This coin honors New Mexico's Chaco Culture National Historical Park. In Chaco Canyon, situated in remote northwestern New Mexico, the Ancient Pueblo people flourished between about 900 and 1150 CE. The site was a cultural center for the Pueblo people, housing many buildings of great cultural and religious significance. The structures were technologically advanced, requiring great feats of architecture and engineering. Some of the structures located in Chaco Canyon remained the largest man-made structures in North America until the 19th Century!

The America The Beautiful series is produced by the United States Mint. Beginning in 2010, five designs are released each year. Each design honors a different National Park or Site in a different state (i.e., one design for each state and territory, plus the District of Columbia). There are already designs slated for production into 2021. These designs are released on circulation quarters as well as these much larger five ounce silver coins. The silver coins are produced in the same .999 fine silver as American Silver Eagles. Owing to large variations in designs and mintages, these coins have become quite popular among collectors and investors!

The obverse side features a very large version of John Flanagan’s 1932 left-profile portrait of President George Washington. The image has graced the obverse side of US quarters for over 80 years now, and was based upon an original sculpture of the president made by William Cousins in 1786.

The reverse side of this coin honors the Chaco Culture National Historical Park. The design shows the landscape of Chaco Canyon, including "kivas," circular structures that served a variety of purposes.

The legal tender status of these coins means the integrity of this coin supply is actively protected by The US Secret Service. The government actively seeks out and prosecutes would-be counterfeiters. Additionally, the international recognition of the US Mint means it will be simple to find a buyer when it comes time to sell your silver.
