About the 2016 Cumberland Gap 5 Oz Silver ATB

The America the Beautiful series has released it’s second coin for 2016. This coin features Kentucky's scenic Cumberland Gap National Park, which played a critical role in the country's growth.

Here are some highlights of this coin:

  • Coin contains 5 ounces of .999 pure silver bullion.
  • Coin is legal tender US currency with a face value of 25¢, though its precious metal and numismatic value is much more.
  • Design features the Cumberland Gap National Park.
  • Quantities of 10 are shipped in original U.S. Mint plastic tubes. Smaller quantities will be delivered in vinyl plastic sleeves.
  • Produced by the US Mint; the second of five designs made in 2016.

This coin honors the historically significant Cumberland Gap, a natural passageway connecting the United States' eastern seaboard with the interior. The ‘gap’ is a geographical feature of the Appalachian mountains, where the mountains yield to flat, more accessible terrain. This ‘gap’ was used by wildlife, Native Americans, and future settlers as a natural passageway through the Appalachian mountains. This break in the mountain range helped enable the 13 struggling US Colonies to expand inland and become a global superpower.

The reverse side of this coin honors the Cumberland Gap. In front, we see a settler looking west through the Gap. Stamped next to him are the words “FIRST DOORWAY TO THE WEST.” Around the coin are the inscriptions, “CUMBERLAND GAP,” “KENTUCKY,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” a Latin phrase meaning, “From many, one,” referring to the original 13 American colonies.

The obverse side features John Flanagan’s 1932 left-profile portrait of President George Washington. The image has graced the obverse side of US quarters for over 80 years now, and was based upon an original sculpture of the president made by William Cousins in 1786.

The legal tender status of these coins means the integrity of this coin supply is actively protected by The US Secret Service. The government actively seeks out and prosecutes would-be counterfeiters. And the international recognition of the US Mint means it will be that much easier to find a buyer when it comes time to sell your gold.
