About the 1/10 Oz American Gold Eagle

Many investors aren't aware that, since its introduction in 1986, the American Gold Eagle has been produced in four different sizes. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of these tenth ounce gold eagles.

Here are some highlights of this coin:

  • Purity is 22 karat, or 91.66%, with the remainder comprised of silver and copper. This makes them more durable than other pure gold coins and immune to most handling damage.
  • Dates vary from over thirty years of production, from 1986 to the present.
  • Legal tender face value of $5.
  • Manufactured by the United States Mint and guaranteed by the US Government.
  • The US Secret Service actively seeks and prosecutes counterfeiters of this coin.
  • Narrow Bid / Ask Spread (the buy and sell price difference is small) because of investor confidence and high liquidity.

Fractional weight gold coins are useful for investors of all wealth levels. They permit an entry into the gold market for those who might not want or be able to invest in a full ounce of gold. Additionally, these smaller coins allow for more fine control over how much gold may be bought or sold at any one time, giving investors greater financial flexibility.

The gold purity of these coins is 91.66%; the remainder is comprised of a silver and copper alloy. This makes the coins more durable and resistant to damage compared to >99.9% pure gold coins. Consequently, the coins may be held physically without as much concern about damage.

These coins are popular, widely-traded items with a minimal bid/ask spread, meaning there is little difference between the buy and sell prices compared to less common coins. The international reputation of the US Mint means it will be that much easier to sell these coins, and their legal tender status means their integrity is actively protected by the US Secret Service; the federal government actively prosecutes would-be counterfeiters.

Even these tiny coins bear the same design as their larger counterparts. On the obverse, Lady Liberty walks towards the holder with an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other as the sun rises behind her. Surrounding the edge of the coin are stars. At the top is the word “LIBERTY” and near the bottom right, "2017."

The reverse side of these coins shows the American Eagle bringing back an olive branch to his nest, where the mother and baby eagles are. Stamped around the coin are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (meaning “from many, one” in Latin, which refers to the original 13 American Colonies), and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Stamped at the bottom of every coin is its weight, metal type, and legal tender value.
