About the 1/4 Oz American Gold Eagle

The American Gold Eagle is considered one of the world’s premier gold bullion coins. These quarter-ounce Gold Eagles have been made to the same exacting specifications as the larger half-ounce and one-ounce coins, and the smaller tenth-ounce coins, since their introduction in 1986.

Here are some highlights of this coin:

  • Purity is 22 karat, or 91.66%, with the remainder comprised of silver and copper. This makes them more durable than other pure gold coins and immune to most handling damage.
  • Manufactured by the United States Mint and guaranteed by the US Government.
  • The US Secret Service actively seeks and prosecutes counterfeiters of this coin.
  • Legal tender in the United States with a face value of $10.
  • Dates may range from the initial year of production, 1986, to the present.
  • Narrow Bid / Ask Spread (the buy and sell price difference is small) because of investor confidence and high liquidity.

Fractional weight gold coins are useful for investors of all wealth levels. They permit an entry into the gold market for those who might not want or be able to invest in a full ounce of gold. Additionally, these smaller coins allow for more fine control over how much gold may be bought or sold at any one time, giving investors greater financial flexibility. In addition to these quarter-ounce gold eagles, the US Mint also makes tenth-ounce coins for even greater flexibility.

By law, all the gold in American Gold Eagles must be mined in the US. Regular strike Gold Eagles of all sizes are actually comprised of a alloy of 91.67% gold, 3.00% silver, and 5.33% copper. This composition makes the coins slightly larger and stronger; the silver and copper harden the metal and protect it from marks and abrasions. Despite the silver-copper alloy, each Gold Eagle contains the full amount of gold per the coin’s denomination; for example, these quarter-ounce gold eagles actually weigh 0.273 oz, but contain exactly one quarter ounce of gold.

The legal tender status of these coins means the integrity of this coin supply is actively protected by the US Secret Service. The government actively seeks out and prosecutes would-be counterfeiters. The international recognition of the US Mint means it will be easy to find a buyer should it come time to sell your gold. These coins are widely-traded coins with a minimal bid/ask spread, meaning there is very little difference between the buy and sell prices when compared to less common items.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty walks towards the holder with an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other as the sun rises behind her. Surrounding the edge of the coin are stars. At the top is the word “LIBERTY” and near the bottom right the date.

The reverse side of these coins shows the American Eagle bringing back an olive branch to his nest, where the mother and baby eagles await. Stamped around the edge are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (meaning “from many, one” in Latin, which refers to the original 13 American Colonies), and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” At the bottom of every coin is stamped its weight, metal type, and legal tender value.
