About the 1 Oz American Gold Eagle

Since its introduction in 1986, the American Gold Eagle has been one of the world's most popular gold bullion coins. It is the official and primary gold bullion coin of the United States. These one-ounce coins are the most popular iteration of the American Gold Eagle, though the US Mint also produces half-ouncequarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce coins.

Here are some highlights of this coin:

  • Purity is 22 karat, or 91.66%, with the balance comprised of silver/copper. This alloy makes the coins more durable than pure gold coins and resistant to most handling damage.
  • Manufactured by the US Mint. Guaranteed by the US Government.
  • The US Secret Service actively seeks out and prosecutes counterfeiters of this coin.
  • Legal tender in the United States with a face value of $50.
  • Dates may range from 1986 (the first year of production) to the present year.
  • Narrow Bid / Ask Spread (the buy and sell price difference is small) because of investor confidence and high liquidity.

By law, all the gold in American Gold Eagles must be sourced in the US. American Gold Eagles of all sizes are actually comprised of an alloy of 91.67% gold, 3.00% silver, and 5.33% copper. This composition makes the coins stronger; the silver and copper hardens the metal, making it more resistant to marks and abrasions. It also makes the coins heavier; these one-ounce gold eagles actually weigh 1.091 oz, but contain exactly one ounce of gold, with the remainder comprised of the silver and copper alloy.

One-ounce gold eagles may be bought individually or in tubes of 20 coins. The coins are shipped from the Mint in "monster boxes" of 500 coins: 25 tubes of 20 coins each. These sealed monster boxes are available for sale to the general public.

The legal tender status of these coins means the integrity of this coin supply is actively protected by the US Secret Service. The government actively seeks out and prosecutes would-be counterfeiters. The international recognition of the US Mint means it will be easy to find a buyer should it come time to sell your gold. These coins are widely-traded coins with a minimal bid/ask spread, meaning there is very little difference between the buy and sell prices when compared to less common items.

The obverse design features the iconic Augustus Saint-Gaudens motif used on U.S. Double Eagles from 1907 through 1933. Lady Liberty walks towards the viewer with an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other as the sun rises behind her. Surrounding the edge of the coin are stars. At the top is the word “LIBERTY” and near the bottom right the date.

The reverse side of these coins shows the American Eagle bringing back an olive branch to his nest, where the mother and baby eagles await. Stamped around the edge are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (meaning “from many, one” in Latin, which refers to the original 13 American Colonies), and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” At the bottom of every coin is stamped its weight, metal type, and legal tender value.
