About the Sunshine Minting (SMI) 1 Oz Buffalo Silver Round

Commodity experts often suggest that silver is merely an industrial metal. While silver is indeed 2nd to oil in its modern day product applications; history proves that for 5,000 years silver has also performed a crucial role as perhaps mankind’s most trusted store of value.

Bullion Round highlights:

  • Produced by Sunshine Minting in the United States.
  • Made of 99.9% fine silver bullion.
  • Holds a minimum of 1 troy ounce in weight.
  • Features the unique Mint Mark SI field that helps identify it as being valid.
  • Displays the iconic Indian Head design that appeared on the 1913-1938 US Indian Head (aka "Buffalo") 5c Nickel.

The Sunshine Mint was established in 1979 and since then it has become a very respected name in the precious metals industry. Their commitment to high quality products and innovation has led to their introduction of the unique Mint Mark SI.

Simply put, this Mint Mark helps people verify if the round is authentic or not. Typically, the process of verifying a coin as authentic means using acid or other destructive effects that degrade the value of the coin. With Sunshine Mints unique security feature, all you need is the special decoder lense produced by Sunshine and you can tell instantly if the round you’re holding in your hand is the real deal.

The Sunshine Mints security pad feature is in the center of the round on the reverse side. This security pad, or Scrambled Indicia (or SI), uses engraving technology that works on the smallest of levels (also known as micro-engraving). This miniature engraving creates a unique mark that is only seen when holding up a special decoder lens produced by the mint. When the decoder lens is placed in front of the SI area, the word “VALID” appears. This unique security feature helps people identify their coins as authentic Sunshine products.

The design of this round is taken from the famous Indian Head Nickel of 1913. The original coin was designed by James Earle Fraser. The obverse design (or front) features the Native American. On the right side of the coin features the word “LIBERTY” and “SMI”. One of the things that makes the design even more remarkable, is that James Fraser used three living Indian Chiefs as models for his coin (Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons).

On the reverse side of the coin features the American Buffalo. At the top of the silver round appears the text “1 TROY oz 999 FINE SILVER”. This, of course, specifying the weight, purity, and metal composition of the round. In the middle of the round features Sunshine Mint Security Pad which validates the round as real or not.
